The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service says it will eliminate all forms of illegal taxations on private school operators in the state.
The revenue agency said the move became necessary to shield private school owners from excessive cum multiple taxations from authorised revenue collectors as well as harmonise taxes for private school operators to ensure uniformity in payments.
Chairman of the Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue, Dr. David Nzekwu, who spoke with journalists at the state assembly complex Awka concerning the agency's decision at the weekend, said the state assembly invited the agency to come and address issues regarding how revenues were collected from private school owners in the state.
He said that the role of the Board of Internal Revenue in the taxation process was to administer revenue laws, noting that the principal fact leading to the confusion with the collection of payment of revenues was that the school operators had not provided the data required for effective taxation in the state.
The AIR boss therefore stressed that there was need for relevant data from all institutions in Anambra state to enable the agency to ensure that only relevant taxes are taxed through the right channel to minimize illegal collection of revenues from the people.
He however expressed optimism that proprietors of private schools in Anambra state will register their schools with the Business Premises Department, the Board of Internal Revenue as well as other relevant agencies of government so that they can be billed and taxed through the right channels and eradicate the issue of touts collecting revenues from private school owners and other unsuspecting citizens.
