Governor Willie Obiano has set up a broad based panel to look into
abuse of human rights by the defunct SARS in the state over the years.
A release signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Mr. C. Don Adinuba states that the setting up of the panel was part of outcome of a meeting between Governor Obiano and Nigerian Youths.
According to the release, the panel is headed by Justice V.N Umeh and
has a period of thirty days to complete its function.
The release stated that other members of the panel include representatives of Association of Anambra State Students, three youth leaders form the three Senatorial Zones in the states, a member of NYSC in the state, Anambra State Chairman Civil Society Network,
Chairman Youth Council of Nigeria Anambra state chapter.
Others are Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria Anambra State
Chapter, Chairman ASATU Youth Wing, Chairman Ohaneze Ndigbo Youth
Wing, a nominee of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha, a nominee of
the Anglican province of the Niger, a representative of Pentecostal
fellowship of Nigeria Anambra state chapter, a representative of Anambra state traditional rulers council, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Youths and Creative Economy, two youngest members of the Executive council and the Special Adviser to the governor on Creative Security.
The panel was charged to look into allegations of extrajudicial
killings by a former Head of the SARS office in the state, retired Chief Superintendent of Police, James Nwafor whose appointment as a Special Assistant to the Governor has been terminated.
The release also said that Mr. Nwafor will face prosecution if found
guilty and directed the Anambra state Commissioner of Police to review
all detentions in not just SARS facilities in the state but also in all police formations to ensure that freedom and dignity of all citizens are upheld at all times.
