The Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS has bagged the award of Most Productive Agency of Government in the year 2022.
This is even as chairman of the Service, Alhaji Muhammad Nami has been honoured with the award of Most Outstanding Productive Personality/Icon of Peace in Nigeria.
The prestigious honours were bestowed on the agency and its chairman by Messengers of Peace Foundation, organisers of National Peace Award in Nigeria.
Decorating the FIRS Chairman, Muhammad Nami with the award on Thursday, the President of Messengers of Peace Foundation, Dr. Suleiman Adejoh who led a delegation of the National Peace Award Committee said the efforts of the FIRS has helped in great measure in stabilising the nation's economy.
Dr. Adejoh noted that the revenue generated by the service which has on annual basis been in the increase has helped in financing the activities of government, building impactful infrastructure for the masses as well as keep government's business afloat.
Dr. Adejoh noted that the premium revenue collection agency under the supervision of Alhaji Nami has demonstrated immense capacity to leverage on technology to collect revenues especially during the peak of COVID-19 in the country.
He remarked that while other government offices were shut, FIRS was open and through the dexterity and creativity of its leadership under Nami deviced means of keeping the affairs of government running by ensuring that revenue generation activities are kept running.
He added that the trainings and capacity building workshops organised by FIRS coupled with innovations brought by the chairman, Nami has helped to block several revenue leakages, thereby increasing the revenue inflow.
He maintained that wasteages have been curbed since inception of the Nami's leadership as the chairman, in addition to the prompt payment of salaries and benefits for staff.
In his response, the awardee Alhaji Muhammad Nami expressed gratitude to the leadership of Messengers of Peace Foundation, organisers of National Peace Award for finding his agency and himself deserving of the award.
He pledged readiness to continue providing leadership to ensure that the nation's tax return is fully harnessed.
While urging agencies, business entities and individuals to ensure they remit the appropriate tax return noted that the government cannot function in the absence of finance.
According to Nami, the agency has introduced user friendly innovations that would help organisations remit tax revenues to the government from the comfort of their homes without stress.
Recently, the service declared a record N6.4 trillion as revenue in 2021, the highest in history.
The agency noted that despite the limitations faced in 2020/2021, it achieved over a hundred percent of its collection target
The FIRS, in the year 2021 collected a total of N6.405 trillion in both oil (N2.008 trillion) and non-oil (N4.396 trillion) revenues as against a target of N6.401 trillion.
Recall that Messengers of Peace Foundation had at a dinner recently organised at Government House Enugu honoured and decorated the state Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi with the prestigious National Peace Award of Most Peaceful Governor in Nigeria
He was also honoured with appointment as one of the Patrons of Messengers of Peace
At an award ceremony which took place at the International Conference Centre Abuja, notable Nigerians, including the governor of Katsina State Governor, His Excellency Rt Hon Aminu Bello Masari was honoured as the most proactive governor in Nigeria and also appointed as a patron of the organization
Also at the event, the Emir of Bichi, His Royal Highness Alh Nasiru Ado Bayero who is also a patron of the organisation was awarded as the Most Peaceful Traditional Ruler in Nigeria while the Executive Governor of Delta state Dr ifeanyi Okowa was honoured as the Best Governor on Youth Empowerment.
