Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 25th February, 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed disbelief over the phone conversation between United States Secretary of State, Antony Binken and President-elect, Bola Tinubu.
Abujapress reports that Blinken had called Tinubu on telephone Tuesday evening, where they discussed ways to deepen democracy in Nigeria.
Reacting to the phone conversation on Wednesday, Atiku said Blinken’s decision to engage Tinubu in such discussion in view of the reported high level of fraud that characterised the election that returned Tinubu as president-elect was a betrayal of the trust Nigerians have on United States as the home of democracy.
The former Vice-President in a tweet on his verified Twitter handle said : “I am in disbelief that Secretary Antony Blinken called Tinubu, a contradiction to the publicly stated position of the US on Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election.
” This is inconceivable considering that America, as the bastion of democracy, is well briefed on the sham election of February 25. To give legitimacy to the widely acknowledged fraudulent election in Nigeria can be demoralising to citizens who have hedged their bet on democracy and the sanctity of the ballot. -AA. ”
PlatinumPost recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) the winner of the 2023 presidential election.
Tinubu polled a total of 8,794,726 votes to defeat his closest rival, Atiku of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 6,984,520 to emerge second while candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi came third with about 6.1 million votes.
Both Atiku and Obi are challenging Tinubu’s victory at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal over alleged widespread irregularities and manipulation of the electoral process.
