The immediate past chairman of Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) FCT 1 branch, Abuja Mr. Wahab Shina Omoniyi has paid tribute to Nigerian first certified indigenous chartered accountant, Pa Akintola Williams, describing him as doyen of the noble profession.

Pa Williams passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 11, 2023 in his Lagos home at the age of 104.

In a tribute on Tuesday, Omoniyi said the giant contributions of Pa Williams in giving the accounting profession a deep root in the Nigerian environment will for a long time remain evergreen in the memory of those coming after him.

According to Omoniyi, late Pa Williams has etched his name in the sands of time especially with his heroic role in establishing and stabilising the Nigerian financial sector, especially Nigerian Stock Exchange, now Nigerian Exchange Group.

He said, "Late Pa Akintola Williams represents a perfect embodiment of selflessness and patriotism in service to fatherland, being a man of many firsts.

"Apart from being the first indigenous chartered accountant, he was a founding member of the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) and later emerged as its first president.

"He is equally the first to establish the first accounting firm in the country, opening the way for others to follow.

"Pa Williams has left indelible achievements for which his name would remain evergreen in the annals of our history as a nation, particularly in the financial sector.

"It is my wish that Pa Williams' sense of selflessness and integrity which earned him honour beyond the shores of our land will remain a guiding light in shaping the now and future of the accounting profession", he stated.

Omoniyi while also praying for a peaceful repose of Pa Williams urged those he left behind to draw solace from the worthy life their late patriarch lived which has provided a guiding light to generations.

Born in 1919, Pa Akintola Williams studied accounting at the University of London and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1947.

He returned to Nigeria and later set up his accounting firm, Akintola Williams & Co. in 1952, which later merged with two other accounting firms becoming Akintola Williams Delloite now Deloitte & Touche.
