Lionel Messi has won the 2023 Ballon d’Or, extending his record for most Ballon d’Or wins to eight. Messi, who now plays for Inter Miami in MLS, captained Argentina to the World Cup title in Qatar last December, ending a 36-year wait for the South American country.
Messi scored seven goals and provided three assists in Qatar, and was named player of the tournament. He also won the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain last season, scoring 21 goals in 41 games.
Messi’s eighth Ballon d’Or win puts him three clear of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has five awards. Messi has now won the award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2023.
In his acceptance speech, Messi thanked his teammates, coaches, and family for their support. He also said that winning the World Cup was a dream come true.
“This is a very special moment for me,” Messi said. “I’ve always dreamed of winning the World Cup, and to be able to do it with my country was amazing. I’m so grateful to my teammates, coaches, and family for their support. I wouldn’t be here without them.”
Messi’s victory in the 2023 Ballon d’Or is a fitting end to a remarkable year for the Argentine star. He has now won every major trophy at club and international level, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
