Passengers commuting from suburb towns into the city of Abuja were in the early hours of today subjected to long trekking and long wait inside their boarded vehicles, as a result of unusual check point mounted by some personnel of the Federal Road Saftey Commission.
The blockage which started around Mudashiri Barrack at Asokoro end of Abuja – Nyanya – Express Road doved tail to Mararaba in Nasarawa State, causing a major traffic jam.
The Nyanya/keffi road which is one of the main access roads into the city of Abuja is famously known for its daily massive congestion during the morning hours when commuters are embarking to their places of work. Some commuters were seen earlier today walking on foot from the Kugbo area in an attempt on getting into town due to the traffic caused by the check.
However, no exact response was given by the road safety officials as at the time this report was filed but our reporter observed that they were in a look out for traffic violators and commercial vehicles that carried more than stipulated passengers.
But passersby who spoke to PlatinumPost blamed the incident on the checkpoint mounted by the road safety officials.
Some of the commuters complained that that the action of Road Safety would make them to be late at work revealed that the majority of them will resume at their offices late.
Speaking to our reporter, one Mr Godfrey a commercial driver whose vehicle over-heated due to the incident said he lost his passengers and was forced to refund back the money he collected from them, in order for them to board another vehicle or trek to their respective places of work.
He stressed that the frustration occasioned by traffic jam has left him with little or no clue on how to remove his vehicle from the expressway.
Also due to the impact of the traffic blockage, another lady who was heavily pregnant and already proceeding to work, was seen being rushed to hospital using the one way route, causing other passengers to forsake the car due to the emergency.
While some complained about the unending standstill, others took it upon themselves to walk on foot in determination to overcome the traffic.
