Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has reiterated his commitment to continue contesting for the Nigerian presidency as long as he remains healthy and alive.
At 77 years old, Abubakar, who was the standard-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, expressed his resolve during an interview with the Hausa service of the Voice of America in Abuja.
Abubakar, who will be 81 by the time of the next presidential election in 2027, emphasized his determination, stating, “Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy.” Despite facing defeat in previous attempts, having been on the ballot as a presidential candidate three times, Abubakar draws inspiration from historical parallels, citing former United States President Abraham Lincoln’s journey to victory after multiple attempts.
Acknowledging the challenges within the PDP, Abubakar stressed the importance of unity and alliances with other political groups to secure victory in the upcoming presidential election.
He highlighted ongoing discussions with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, regarding the possibility of a merger. Abubakar affirmed his support for any qualified candidate from the south-east, emphasizing the need for collaboration to advance the collective goal of securing the presidency.
As Abubakar remains resolute in his political aspirations, his willingness to engage in dialogue and forge alliances underscores his commitment to advancing the interests of the Nigerian people.
Despite the challenges and uncertainties ahead, Abubakar’s determination to continue contesting reflects his enduring belief in the democratic process and his vision for a better future for Nigeria.
