Tragedy struck in Nasaru village, Ningi local government area of Bauchi State on Wednesday as an enraged mob took the law into their own hands, resulting in the death of a young man identified as Yunusa, following allegations of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
According to eyewitness accounts, the unfortunate incident unfolded during a heated argument Yunusa had with his friends, where he allegedly made derogatory remarks against the Prophet.
This sparked outrage among bystanders who demanded Yunusa retract his statements. Despite the mounting pressure, he reportedly stood firm, leading to physical assaults from the crowd.
“The victim, a member of the Faira Islamic Sect, uttered insulting words towards the Prophet during the argument. When confronted by young men to withdraw his statement, he adamantly refused and reiterated his stance,” one witness recounted.
Efforts by police operatives to intervene and rescue Yunusa proved futile as they were overwhelmed by the angry mob armed with stones, sticks, and other makeshift weapons.
The situation escalated further when attempts were made to shelter Yunusa at the local police station, with reports indicating that the mob attempted to set the station ablaze.
As of the time of this report, the police authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Local residents remain on edge following the unrest, awaiting further developments from law enforcement authorities.
