Federal Polytechnic Ede in Osun State has suspended 27 Higher National Diploma (HND) students for two semesters and banned two former Student Union leaders from campus.
This disciplinary action follows a riotous protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The unrest began when EFCC operatives raided hostels in Owode Ede, a neighboring community, and arrested over 70 suspected internet fraudsters. In response, some students protested at the EFCC zonal office in Ibadan. The protest escalated into a violent demonstration on campus, resulting in property damage.
Students accused the school management of failing to secure the release of the arrested students. Consequently, the school’s management formed a panel to investigate the incident and suspended student union activities.
Sola Lawal, the institution’s media director, confirmed the disciplinary actions. “The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede Osun state constituted an investigation committee to unravel the mysteries surrounding the students’ crisis/rampage of Thursday, May 9th, 2024, leading to the stoning of people at the senior staff club,” Lawal stated. “The unprovoked attitude led to the vandalization of individual and institution’s properties. This unwarranted action negates the motto of the great citadel which the institution is known for after a painstaking and thorough investigation.”
He further added, “27 students of HND 1 and 2 have been suspended for two academic sessions, and two former Student Union leaders were banned from entering the two campuses of the institution.”
