The White House has announced that President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 and is experiencing mild symptoms.

As a result, the president has canceled a scheduled campaign speech in Las Vegas and will be returning to Delaware to self-isolate.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the White House stated: “President Biden is vaccinated, boosted, and he is experiencing mild symptoms following a positive COVID-19 test. He will be returning to Delaware where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time.”

The President presented with upper respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose and non-productive cough, and general malaise. Although he felt well enough for his first event of the day, he underwent a COVID-19 test due to worsening symptoms, which returned positive.

President Biden will be following CDC guidelines for symptomatic individuals and self-isolating at his home in Rehoboth. His medical metrics are stable, with a normal respiratory rate of 16, a temperature of 97.8°F, and a pulse oximetry reading of 97%. He has received his first dose of Paxlovid to help manage the infection.

Concerns Over Biden’s Fitness

Despite growing concerns about his age and fitness, particularly in the context of the upcoming presidential election, the White House maintains that 81-year-old Biden will remain in the race. These concerns have been fueled by instances such as his performance in a presidential debate against Donald Trump, where he cited a cold and jet lag as factors affecting his fluency.

However, the White House spokesperson reaffirmed that “The president is clear-eyed, and he is staying in the race,” underscoring Biden’s determination to seek re-election despite his recent health issues.
