The Lagos State Police Command has issued a warrant for the arrest of a doctor named Idra Bassey in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman, known only as Abiola, who tragically died during a buttock enhancement surgery at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident on Thursday.
According to reports, Abiola visited the clinic on Monday for the procedure, commonly referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).
The surgery, which involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks to enhance their size and shape, has become increasingly popular, especially in Lagos, despite warnings from medical professionals about its potential risks.
Tragically, during the procedure, Abiola lost consciousness after a nurse, acting on the instructions of Dr. Bassey, administered an injection. Abiola’s driver, who had taken her to the clinic, informed the police that she began gasping for breath shortly after receiving the injection.
While the nurse involved has been apprehended, Dr. Bassey is currently at large. Hundeyin confirmed that the doctor is a suspect in the ongoing investigation and has officially been declared wanted.
The case has drawn comparisons to a similar incident in 2019, where a 31-year-old British woman, Melissa Kerr, died during a buttock enhancement surgery at a private hospital in Istanbul. In 2023, the British Broadcasting Corporation reported that Kerr had not been adequately informed of the procedure’s risks before traveling for the surgery.
