Chidimma Adetshina, a finalist in the Miss South Africa pageant, has withdrawn from the competition amid allegations surrounding her nationality.

The 23-year-old model, who was born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and Mozambican mother, had been at the centre of a controversy over her eligibility to compete.

The Department of Home Affairs had launched an investigation into Adetshina’s nationality, alleging that her mother may have committed fraud and identity theft in 2001.

Although Adetshina was cleared of any wrongdoing, she announced her decision to withdraw from the competition on Thursday, citing concerns for her family’s safety.

In a statement on Instagram, Adetshina expressed her gratitude to the Miss South Africa organization and her supporters, saying, “I leave with a heart full of gratitude for this amazing experience.” She also wished her fellow finalists well, saying, “Whoever represents us wears the crown for all.”

Adetshina’s withdrawal comes just days before the Miss South Africa grand finale, scheduled for August 10 in Pretoria. The winner will go on to represent South Africa at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico later this year.”
