Lieutenant Commander Gideon Gwaza, the Base Operations Officer of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base in Bonny, Rivers State, was laid to rest on Wednesday at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.

Gwaza tragically lost his life during a daring rescue operation on July 30, 2024, while attempting to save the lives of those aboard the vessel MV AMBIKA 4.

The operation, which took place near the Okpobo Field by the Okpobo River, was aimed at rescuing 59 people from the vessel that was on the brink of sinking.

Although Gwaza’s heroic efforts led to the successful rescue of all 59 individuals, he unfortunately lost his life in the process, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and dedication to duty.

The burial was marked by a solemn ceremony, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for Gwaza’s service and sacrifice.

His loss is a significant one for the Nigerian Navy and the nation, underscoring the risks and dangers faced by those who serve in the armed forces to protect others.

Lieutenant Commander Gideon Gwaza’s courage and commitment will be remembered, and his sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the selflessness displayed by military personnel in the line of duty.
