The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the government to reverse its "ill-conceived" policies that have led to the current economic crisis and sparked nationwide protests. In a communique, NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja demanded that the government prioritize the welfare of the people, create jobs, and ensure fair distribution of resources.
The NLC condemned the government's handling of the protests, criticizing the use of violence and the trivialization of treasonable felony. They called for an independent investigation into the killings and maiming of protesters and demanded immediate relief measures to alleviate the suffering of workers and the general populace.
The labour body directed all workers to remain safe amid the protests and to continue demanding better governance. The NLC remains committed to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and the broader population.
The protests, tagged #EndBadGovernance, began on August 1, with demonstrators voicing their frustration about the government's economic policies and insensitivity to the plight of citizens. The government's removal of fuel subsidies and electricity tariff hike have been particularly contentious.
The NLC's demands come as the protests continue to spread across the country, with many Nigerians calling for improved governance and economic relief. The government has yet to respond to the NLC's demands, but the labour body has vowed to continue fighting for the rights of workers and citizens.
