The Oba of Yoruba in Kano State, Dr. Murtala Otisese, has called for the suspension of the ongoing protests across the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Otisese acknowledged the legitimacy of the grievances prompting the demonstrations but emphasised that violent protests are not the solution.
He urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action by addressing the nation directly, acknowledging the protesters’ concerns, and outlining tangible steps to address them.
The statement reads: “In light of the ongoing nationwide Hunger Protest, which began on August 1, 2024, I, Engr. Amb. (Dr.) Murtala Alimi Otisese (Adetimirin 1), the Oba of Yoruba in Kano, feel compelled to address this critical issue that has gripped our nation. As a leader and representative of the Yoruba people in Kano, I acknowledge the legitimate rights of Nigerian citizens to protest, as enshrined in our constitution.
This fundamental right is a cornerstone of our democracy, enabling citizens to express their dissatisfaction and seek redress.
Nigeria is currently experiencing difficult times. Skyrocketing inflation, low purchasing power, the devaluation of the Naira, and the removal of oil subsidies have placed immense strain on households across the country. The distress is palpable, and the voices of the aggrieved are resonating throughout the nation.
While the grievances are legitimate and the hardships undeniable, violent protests are not the ultimate solution. Historically, protests in our country have had the propensity to turn violent, primarily due to the involvement of uneducated individuals who infiltrate peaceful demonstrations, leading to chaos and destruction.
In this context, I call on all Nigerian youths to suspend the ongoing protests. Your voices have been heard by the authorities. Continued protests risk further infiltration by hoodlums and looters, which will only lead to more destruction of lives and properties, as witnessed in the last 72 hours. This not only harms innocent citizens but also inflicts severe damage on our already fragile economy.
The safety and well-being of our people are paramount. We must not allow the situation to deteriorate further. It is time to transition from the streets to the negotiating table. Dialogue, rather than violence, should be our path forward.
I urge the Federal Government, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to take decisive action in calming the situation. The President must address the nation through a direct broadcast, acknowledging the grievances of the protesters and outlining tangible steps to address their concerns.
Furthermore, it is crucial that the President and his administration engage directly with the leaders of the protest movement. A unified and coherent response from the government is essential to restoring calm and trust.
The time for action is now. Our nation stands at a critical juncture, and the choices we make will shape our future. Let us choose peace over violence, dialogue over discord, and unity over division.
Together, we can navigate these challenging times and emerge stronger as a nation.
My fellow Nigerians, let us embrace the spirit of resilience and hope that has always defined us. Let us work together to find sustainable solutions to our challenges. And let us remember that in unity, we can overcome any adversity.
I remain committed to the well-being of the Yoruba people in Kano and all Nigerians. My doors are always open for dialogue and cooperation in the quest for a better Nigeria.”
