As protests begin nationwide, hundreds of supporters have taken to the streets in Bauchi in compliance.
As early as 8:00 am, the protesters stormed Gwalameji, Nasarawa and Yelwan Makaranta areas in the state capital to protest against hardships as a result of policies of the President Bola Tinubu led administration.
The protests at Gwallameji and Yelwan Makaranta were carried by protesters under a peaceful atmosphere, with placards reading Hunger is killing us, return fuel subsidy among others.
However, the majority of residents were indifferent.
The streets were almost empty as many shops were closed and activities.
A resident, Janet Inusa who chose not to participate because it was not properly organized.
“We are all feeling the hardship but why I didn’t join is because I am avoiding being caught in violence,” she said
“But I support the protest 100 percent”
Security operatives, Police and other security operatives were stationed around School of Agriculture College, Bauchi and Rafin Zurfi areas to maintain order and peace.
Some protesters around the Nasarawa area said they were restricted from moving to Government House to register their complaint
“The police are preventing us,” one of the protesters.
However, a leader of the protest in Yelwan Makaranta, Comrade Umar Aliyu described the protests as successful.
“The protest is going to plan because we advertised it as peaceful and it is going as expected,” he said.
Aliyu, a former gubernatorial candidate of the Young Peoples Party disclosed that the protesters intend to move to Government House to register their grievances.
“One of the major reasons for protesting is fuel subsidy which touches the life of every citizen. It is the backbone of our sufferings. Hunger and starvation is disturbing everybody because of the removal of oil subsidies in one night. We want him to bring it back”
