A collision involving two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses in Lagos on Wednesday night has left several passengers injured, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The incident occurred at the Bus Rapid Transit corridor at Iyana-Ipaja, inward Pleasure road, raising concerns about road safety in the city.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, confirmed the crash in a statement, noting that the injured passengers were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The crash happened late in the night, at around 11:39 p.m., after LASEMA received distress calls through their emergency lines.
The accident reportedly occurred when one of the BRT buses, in an attempt to avoid a commercial motorcyclist who was illegally using the BRT lane, collided with another oncoming BRT bus.
The quick maneuver to avoid the motorcyclist led to the unfortunate collision, which caused injuries to several passengers aboard both buses. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident.
LASEMA’s Dolphin Response Team from the Igando Base was dispatched to the scene to manage the situation. Upon their arrival, they found that the crash had caused significant disruption to traffic on the busy corridor.
The agency also activated two tow trucks to remove the damaged buses from the road and restore normal traffic flow.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu reiterated the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations, particularly the proper use of designated lanes like the BRT corridor.
He also expressed relief that the accident did not result in any fatalities and assured that the injured passengers are receiving the necessary medical care.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers on Lagos roads, especially when traffic rules are not strictly followed.
The prompt response by LASEMA helped to minimize the impact of the accident, but the injuries sustained by the passengers highlight the ongoing need for vigilance and enforcement of traffic laws to ensure the safety of all road users.
