A tragic motor accident on Monday night claimed the lives of no fewer than 16 people on the Ore-Ondo highway in Ondo State.

The fatal crash occurred in the Ajue community and involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a truck, resulting in a devastating scene of destruction.

Eyewitnesses reported that the collision led to a fire that engulfed both vehicles, burning 16 passengers beyond recognition.

In addition to the fatalities, three individuals sustained serious injuries, while two others managed to escape unharmed.

The accident was reportedly caused by a head-on collision between the bus and the truck, allegedly due to over-speeding and wrongful overtaking. The impact was so severe that it left little chance for the passengers to survive the ensuing inferno.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) was quick to respond to the scene. According to the State Sector Commander, Ibitoye Samuel, the accident occurred at around 8 p.m., with rescue operations continuing until 11 p.m. that night.

Although investigations are ongoing, initial findings point to over-speeding and dangerous overtaking as the primary causes of the tragedy.

Commander Ibitoye expressed his deep concern over the incident, urging motorists to exercise caution and prioritize defensive driving techniques.

He emphasized that over-speeding remains a significant contributor to road accidents in Nigeria and stressed the importance of responsible driving to prevent such heartbreaking incidents.

This tragic accident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers on Nigeria’s roads, especially when traffic rules are not strictly followed.

The loss of these lives is a profound tragedy, and it highlights the urgent need for greater awareness and adherence to road safety measures.
