Nigeria’s Esther Nworgu delivered an outstanding performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, winning a silver medal in the women’s 41kg para powerlifting event on Wednesday.

Nworgu’s remarkable lift of 118kg earned her Nigeria’s second medal at the Games.

The competition was intense, with Nworgu setting two new personal records by lifting 112kg and 118kg. However, China’s Zhe Cui narrowly edged her out for the gold, setting a new Paralympic record with a lift of 119kg.

Nworgu’s journey to the podium began with a 106kg lift, placing her second behind Cui, who led with 108kg.

In the second round, Nworgu lifted 112kg, but Cui maintained her lead with a 113kg lift. In the final round, Nworgu’s best lift of 118kg secured her the silver medal, while Brazil’s Lara de Lima took bronze with a lift of 109kg.

Nworgu’s silver marks another proud moment for Nigeria at the Paralympics, following Eniola Bolaji’s bronze win in Badminton after defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyna.

Nworgu’s achievement further showcases Nigeria’s strength in para sports on the global stage.
