Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has voiced her opposition to Peter Obi taking on a vice presidential role in the 2027 elections, stating she would actively campaign against him if that happens.

In a video posted on Monday, September 16, Yesufu expressed her frustration at how highly qualified individuals are often relegated to secondary roles, suggesting that Obi should aim for leadership rather than settling for a vice presidential position.

Peter Obi, who ran as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, had previously indicated a willingness to work with other politicians, including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

He stated, “I’m ready to collaborate with anyone interested in lifting people out of poverty,” emphasising that any collaboration should focus on improving citizens’ lives rather than just winning elections.

Obi clarified his position in an interview with News Central, stating, “Quite frankly, for me, I’m not desperate to be Nigerian president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work. If I see people who can do the work better, I will.”

However, he recently denied reports suggesting he would accept a vice presidential role, calling it a distortion of his statement.

Obi asserted, “I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges.”
