The Nigerian government has suspended several high-ranking officials of the Correctional Service following allegations of misconduct related to cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky.
This decision comes after an audio recording surfaced, indicating that Bobrisky, who is currently serving a six-month prison sentence, was given unauthorized access to an apartment outside the correctional facility.
Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), announced the suspensions in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja.
The probe into the allegations was initiated by Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo on Wednesday.
Ahmed stated, “Following the viral video trending on social media on alleged infractions by Officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service relating to Mr. Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has suspended forthwith the following Senior Officers of the Service.”
The suspended officials include Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) overseeing the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) in charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri.
Additionally, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, who was stationed at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, has been suspended for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate outside the facility.
Another officer, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) managing the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kuje, Abuja, faces suspension for reportedly accepting bribes on behalf of an inmate.
Ahmed assured the public that the investigation’s findings would be disclosed upon its completion.
