The Department of State Services (DSS) has returned the passport of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, following its earlier seizure.
Platinumpost reports that Ajaero’s passport was released on Tuesday through the legal assistance of Abubakar Marshall, a lawyer from Falana Chambers, after it was initially confiscated by the DSS.
According to prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana, the passport has now been safely returned to Ajaero.
The DSS had detained Ajaero on Monday as he was preparing to travel to the United Kingdom for official union business. He was held for over 15 hours, during which his passport was seized.
In response, the NLC issued a stern warning to the government, demanding the release of their leader and threatening to take action if their demands were not met.
Faced with mounting pressure, the DSS released Ajaero before the NLC’s ultimatum expired, and his passport was returned the following day.
This episode highlights the ongoing tension between labor unions and the government, with the NLC standing firm in support of their president.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how both sides will navigate future interactions, especially in the context of workers’ rights and union activities.
