Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, might have to move their remaining home matches for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers to Nigeria.

This potential relocation comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew approval for the use of the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

CAF’s decision followed a recent inspection that uncovered several issues with the stadium, including an uneven playing surface, inadequate drainage, and poor grass cover. These problems led CAF to revoke its approval for the venue.

The Baba Yara Stadium isn’t the only facility facing challenges. Reports indicate that other major stadiums in Ghana, such as the Cape Coast Stadium and the Accra Sports Stadium, are also experiencing similar maintenance issues.

With Ghana lacking an approved venue for their crucial AFCON qualifiers, the team may play their upcoming fixtures in Nigeria. CAF has directed Ghana to find an alternative venue for their Matchday 3 and 4 games, scheduled for October.

The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria, is currently a leading candidate for hosting these matches. Other possible venues include Côte d’Ivoire’s Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Stade de la Paix, Cameroon’s Japoma Stadium in Douala, and Morocco’s Berkane Municipal Stadium.

The Ghana Football Association is expected to finalize their decision and inform CAF soon.
