Dr. Idara Bassey, a Lagos-based medical doctor, has been apprehended by the police in connection with the tragic death of a 36-year-old woman, Abiola, who died during a buttock enlargement surgery at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1.

The incident, which occurred on August 26, 2024, led to a manhunt for Bassey, who had initially fled after the procedure went wrong.

According to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, Bassey is now being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, where she is currently under investigation.

The case has attracted significant attention due to the nature of the procedure—a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)—and the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a cosmetic surgery technique that involves removing fat from other parts of the body and injecting it into the buttocks to create a fuller and rounder appearance.

Despite its popularity, the procedure carries significant risks, as highlighted by numerous medical experts.

These risks were tragically underscored by the death of a 31-year-old British woman, Melissa Kerr, during a similar surgery in Istanbul in 2019.

The procedure continues to be sought after, particularly in Lagos, where many women have shared their experiences of undergoing the surgery successfully, despite widespread warnings.

In this case, Abiola had left her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, Ibeju Lekki, and directed her driver to take her to the clinic for the buttock enlargement procedure.

It was reported that after the nurse, allegedly acting on Bassey’s instructions, administered an injection, Abiola lost consciousness and began gasping for breath. The driver, who was present at the time, alerted the police.

While the nurse involved has already been arrested, Bassey’s sudden disappearance had made her a suspect in the case. Her recent arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation.

When contacted for an update, Hundeyin confirmed that Bassey is now in custody at the SCID.

However, he noted that details regarding potential charges and the grounds for them would only be determined after the investigation is completed.

The case continues to highlight the dangers associated with cosmetic surgeries like the Brazilian Butt Lift, particularly when performed in settings that may not fully adhere to medical safety standards.
