The National Economic Council (NEC) has called on states yet to submit their reports on the proposed State Police to do so by September 9, 2024.
Acting Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Lawal, revealed this during a press briefing following the 144th NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Mr. Lawal, all states except Adamawa, Kebbi, Kwara, Sokoto, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have made their submissions regarding the proposed security framework.
The initiative is part of efforts to address widespread security challenges across the country, including the North-East, North-West, North-Central, South-West, South-East, and South-South regions.
Mr. Lawal highlighted the importance of the proposal, noting that NEC had previously called for submissions from states to assess the feasibility of establishing State Police.
He further warned that states which fail to submit their reports by the September 9 deadline will have to abide by any decision NEC makes concerning the establishment of State Police.
The NEC’s push for State Police comes amid increasing concerns about the need for a more localized security apparatus to combat rising insecurity in various parts of the country.
