The ongoing fuel scarcity crisis in Nigeria has resulted in a tragic incident, with the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for Akure South Local Government, Oluwatuyi Olasoji, reported dead.

Olasoji collapsed while waiting to purchase fuel at a filling station in Akure, Ondo State.

Local reports indicate that the incident occurred last week as he attempted to buy Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). After collapsing, he was rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Owo, where he underwent surgery.

Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, he passed away on Monday, September 9.

The current fuel scarcity has intensified across Nigeria, leading to long queues at petrol stations and skyrocketing transport fares. As traffic conditions worsen, many commuters are left stranded.

In response to the crisis, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently addressed the situation, assuring the public that conditions would improve in the coming days.

“The market has been deregulated, meaning that petrol prices are now determined by market forces rather than by the government or NNPC Ltd. Additionally, the exchange rate plays a significant role in influencing these prices,” the NNPCL stated.

The nation is also awaiting the anticipated start of fuel lifting from the Dangote Refinery, scheduled for mid-September, which is expected to alleviate some of the supply issues.
