Lagos police authorities have summoned three officers following allegations that they extorted N1 million from members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The incident, reportedly occurring in the Surulere area of Lagos, gained traction on social media after footage of the encounter was shared late Friday.
Social media user Oluyemi Fasipe, who posted the videos, accused the officers of taking N1 million from the corps members.
“Dear @BenHundeyin, Your officers today in Surulere extorted 1 million naira from three corps members,” he stated on Friday. “They were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to the KAFARU OLUWOLE TINUBU HOUSE AREA C POLICE COMMAND of the @LagosPoliceNG where they were robbed. Their offence was the absence of a physical copy of a driver’s license. This is evil!”
In one of the videos, police officers were observed checking the occupants’ documents, and tensions escalated, prompting additional officers to arrive at the scene. An officer was seen entering the car and instructing the occupants to stop recording. He also prevented them from contacting anyone.
In response to the situation, Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed that the officers involved have been summoned for disciplinary action.
“The men have been summoned and their trial has commenced,” he wrote on X in response to Fasipe’s post.
“We urge the complainants to visit the Complaint Response Unit at the State Headquarters to testify at the ongoing trial.”
