Armed bandits have reportedly taken over the Nagwamase military cantonment, a key training ground for the Nigerian Army’s artillery corps located in Niger State.

The alarming situation has drawn the attention of the Niger State House of Assembly, which raised concerns over the security implications of the development. The cantonment, situated in Kontagora Local Government Area, is now surrounded by bandit camps, displacing residents in 23 nearby communities.

During a plenary session on Tuesday, Abdullahi Isah, the lawmaker representing Kontagora II constituency, brought the matter to the Assembly’s attention through a motion of urgent public importance. He revealed that the expansive training ground, which stretches across Kontagora and Mariga local government areas, is now occupied by non-state actors.

Isah further noted that the ongoing bandit occupation has resulted in continuous attacks, forcing many farmers to abandon their lands. Additionally, some residents remain in captivity, held by the gunmen operating in the area.

In response, the Assembly has called on the state government to work closely with military authorities to clear the area of bandits and restore security to the affected communities, enabling displaced residents to return home.
