Have you ever heard about the Mursi tribe? They live in Omo Valley, an isolated region in Ethiopia. They are one of the last tribes that still wear traditional clothing and accessories. Mursi women are famous for their wooden lip plates – a symbol of beauty and identity.

AFRICA IS VERY RICH IN CULTURE AND TRADITIONAL PRACTICES BUT THE MURSI TRIBE WOMEN IN ETHIOPIA AND TANZANIA ARE EXCEPTIONAL IN PRESERVEING THEIR PRIMITIVE CULTURAL LIPS PLATE DESPITE WESTERN INFLUENCE ON AFRICAN CULTURAL PRACTICES.

In Ethiopia, the beauty of a Mursi woman is measured by how much she stretch her lips and put a round plate on it for months until the lips are large and make a round hole inside her lip as seen in the photos.

This is strong cultural practice by every Mursi woman before you get marry and most of whom remain in the rural areas to resist the western and other cultural influence from the urban centres that might corrupt their millennium old cultural practice.
