Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced a new minimum wage of N80,000 for workers in the state civil service.

The decision was disclosed in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong, on Wednesday in Uyo.

To ensure the smooth implementation of the new wage structure, the governor has set up a committee led by the Head of Service, Effiong Essien. Other members include the Chairmen of the State Civil Service Commission and the Local Government Service Commission, along with thirteen additional members.

The committee has been given a month to submit its report on the wage increase’s execution.

This announcement comes after President Bola Tinubu’s recent introduction of a N70,000 minimum wage for federal workers, effective from July 2024, following extended negotiations with labor unions.

This move is expected to bolster the financial well-being of state employees and aligns with efforts to address inflation and living cost concerns across Nigeria.
