Coordinator of Ohanaeze Youth Wing South-South Zone, High Chief Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa has called for peace amidst the tussle for the position of Igwe Ndigbo in Bayelsa.

Arthur-Ugwa who is also the Financial Secretary Ohanaeze Youth Wing Worldwide and Director-General, Non-natives in Bayelsa made the call in a statement which he signed and made available to newsmen.

He called on all parties to sheathe their swords, following media reports of violence and physical attacks.

The reported physical attacks involved the Bayelsa Commissioner for Special Duties, Mazi Johnson Onuma and the Enugu state President of Ohanaeze in Bayelsa , Chief Johnpaul Nwankwo, with the latter  “badly injured amd hospitalised “.

Arthur-Ugwa said that since the organization’s leadership already canceled the World Igbo Day 2024 as a mark of respect for its President-General who awaits burial, it would be wrong to discuss Ohanaeze politics at this time.

He advised Onuma to focus on his position as Commissioner rather than be preoccupied with politics in Ohanaeze.

This, he said, would justify Gov. Douye Diri’s decision to appoint him and other non Bayelsa persons to his cabinet.

“ All hands must be on deck to ensure success of Gov. Diri’s administration and peace in Bayelsa.

“ We are brothers and this is time to build bridges rather than fight “, he said. I personally called the commissioner Mazi Onuma Johnson to confirm exactly what happened and to broker peace. This is the time to project Bayelsa to the world and bring in investors and not in fight as appointees of the government. Appointing Non-natives is a privilege not our right.

He reiterated the commitment of Governor Diri to ensure a cordial relationship between Bayelsa and non-indigenes of the state, assuring that the governor is interested in peaceful co-existence among all.

He noted that indigenes, including Hon. Gabriel Onyenwife and all friends of Igbo nation have assured that all contentious issues will be amicably resolved will the generality of Igbo will laugh at last.

In a response, Onuma however denied getting involved in a fight with Nwankwo, who is currently recuperating in hospital.
