The Nigerian Senate has summoned Brigadier-General Buba Marwa (rtd), Chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to address allegations made against the Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Oyelola Ashiru of Kwara South.
This move follows a point of order raised by Senator Ashiru during a plenary session.

In response to the situation, the Senate has established a six-member committee to investigate the claims made by the NDLEA.

The agency had accused Senator Ashiru of making derogatory remarks about them during a Senate debate, which they believe was motivated by personal vendetta.

The accusation stems from Ashiru’s alleged frustration over his inability to prevent the arrest of his aides who were involved in drug-related activities at his residence in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The Senate panel, chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), includes Senator Kaka Shehu (Borno Central), Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central), Senator Ireti Kingibe (FCT), Senator Afolabi Shauibu (Ogun Central), and Senator Lawal Usman (Kaduna Central). Their task is to summon all parties involved to address the matter.

During the session, Senator Ashiru invoked Order 42 of the Senate Standing Order to express how the allegations have negatively impacted his reputation.

He firmly denied any personal involvement with drugs, emphasizing that he does not consume alcohol or even carbonated drinks. He urged his colleagues to handle the issue with the seriousness it deserves to clear his name.
