Nigeria has entered a partnership with Swedish telecom giant Ericsson through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a 5G Innovation Lab.
This initiative aims to advance the nation’s digital infrastructure and boost its technological capabilities.

The announcement was made by Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson for Vice President Kashim Shettima, during the Vice President’s working visit to Sweden.

Ericsson, recognized globally for pioneering mobile network technology, has played a significant role in rolling out 5G networks worldwide. Its involvement in the innovation lab is expected to enhance Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure by providing faster internet speeds, improved connectivity, and stimulating technological innovation across multiple sectors.

Vice President Shettima’s visit to Sweden, which began on October 16, 2024, follows directives from President Bola Tinubu.

The two-day trip focuses on expanding cooperation between Nigeria and Sweden, particularly in areas such as information and communication technology (ICT), innovation, digitalization, and sustainable transportation.

As part of the visit, Shettima met with key Swedish officials, including Crown Princess Victoria and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, to explore opportunities for collaboration.

The Vice President also engaged with Norrsken, a Stockholm-based venture capital firm that recently launched a $205 million tech fund, Norrsken22, to support African startups. Around 40% of the fund’s investments are expected to be directed toward Nigerian entrepreneurs, offering critical support for the country’s growing digital economy.

This strategic partnership with Ericsson aligns with Nigeria’s goal of fostering technological innovation and expanding its digital infrastructure to drive economic growth.
