The Nigerian Army is set to witness a change in leadership as Major-General Olufemi Oluyede, recently appointed acting Chief of Army Staff, is scheduled to formally assume his role on Friday, November 1, 2024.
The brief assumption ceremony will take place at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, marking Oluyede’s first official step into the role.
Oluyede’s appointment by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday comes as Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the current Chief of Army Staff, remains unavailable due to health-related issues.
This development follows a statement from the Defence Headquarters, which noted that appointing an acting Chief of Army Staff is uncommon within the military structure, as outlined by the Harmonised Armed Forces Act.
Previously, Major-General Abdulsalam Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, had been overseeing routine updates for Lagbaja.
A formal notice issued by Chris Erondu, a Group Captain representing Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, confirmed that the handover ceremony is scheduled for 10 am. It stated, “The formal taking over ceremony of the newly appointed acting Chief of Army Staff, Major General Olufemi Oluyede is scheduled for tomorrow.”
