Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello found himself at the center of an unexpected role during his arraignment at the FCT High Court on Wednesday.
After Justice Maryann Anenih, who was set to take his plea and that of two other defendants, abruptly left the courtroom out of anger, Bello took charge of the situation, helping to restore order.
Justice Anenih had risen suddenly and announced she would not return to the proceedings until “sanity” was restored in the courtroom.
Following her exit, Yahaya Bello, who had been sitting at the front, quickly jumped up and approached the crowd that had been causing the disruption.
In an unexpected move, the former governor directed his supporters and followers to vacate their seats and leave the courtroom.
His intervention helped to calm the tense situation, as his followers complied without resistance, leaving the courtroom one by one.
To ensure further order, Bello took a seat at the entrance of the courtroom, personally overseeing the exit of each individual who had been part of the crowd, ensuring they obeyed the court’s directive.
The legal teams for both sides remain in place, with Kemi Pinheiro SAN representing the federal government in the 16-count charges against Bello and his co-defendants, while Joseph Bodunde Dauda SAN leads the defense team for the former governor.
