Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has extended clemency to ten inmates nearing the end of their sentences, utilizing his prerogative of mercy to give them a second chance.
This decision was announced by the Chairman of the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Hon. Justice P.O. Isibor (Rtd), who shared that the council had received a clemency request from the Benin Correctional Service.
The request, submitted on November 5, 2024, by the Controller of the Correctional Centre, highlighted the inmates’ approaching sentence completion and the potential benefits of a fresh start through a pardon.
Justice Isibor said, “The Council convened a meeting where their applications were scrutinized and unanimously made appropriate recommendations,” Justice Isibor explained. Mr. Governor is respectfully invited to consider and approve the recommendations of the Council.”
Following the recommendation, Governor Obaseki approved the release of the ten inmates, identified as Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, Gift Osaretun, Takyi Rockson, Dikuar Friday, Ossai Glory, Augustine Sunday, Daulagha Ebifagha Godluck, James Paul, and Anas Isah.
