A group of opposition coalition lawmakers has raised concerns over an alleged plot to extend the tenure of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), led by Mr. Umar Damagun, until 2027.

The lawmakers claim that this move is aimed at weakening the party.

Speaking on Sunday, Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the group, said “Today we have a political party, the PDP, that’s supposed to lead the opposition but is not doing so because they have hijacked the heartbeat of the opposition party.”

Ugochinyere alleges that powerful individuals within the party have orchestrated plans to ensure the National Executive Committee meeting, tasked with choosing a chairman from North Central, is unsuccessful.

The ultimate goal, Ugochinyere claims, is to maintain the current acting national chairman in office until 2027, thereby allowing the party to impose a weak presidential candidate.

“We have impostors among us, and the ruling party will be laughing at them now that they want to sabotage their own party,” he said.

Ugochinyere also criticized some PDP governors for allegedly collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in exchange for control over their respective states.
