The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the December 1 deadline for state governors to implement the new minimum wage.
This comes after the NLC gave state governments an ultimatum to implement the new minimum wage by the end of November 2024.
According to Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, “Yes, the ultimatum still stands. Nothing has changed.” This statement confirms that the NLC is holding firm on its deadline.
In response to the ultimatum, several state governments are scrambling to meet the deadline. The Sokoto State Government, for instance, has met with the state chapter of the NLC and urged them to submit a proposal for wage adjustment. Similarly, the Zamfara State Government has announced plans to commence payment of the new minimum wage after verifying its workforce.
Some states have already taken steps to implement the new minimum wage. Taraba State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has approved the implementation of a N70,000 minimum wage for workers in the state, effective November 2024. Plateau State has also followed suit, with the governor approving the immediate implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage.
However, not all states are on track to meet the deadline. In Cross River State, the Committee on Minimum Wage is still negotiating with state workers, while the Imo state government has remained silent on the matter. Osun State’s committee on minimum wage has also yet to unveil a package for workers amidst rising inflation.
