The Lagos State Police Command has launched a search for a truck driver who allegedly struck and killed a revenue collector along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Sunday.
According to the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the incident occurred when a containerized truck (FST 887 XD) ran over the victim, who was attempting to collect dues from the driver.
“The truck, after the fatal incident, sped off, with both the driver and his conductor fleeing the scene,” Bakare-Oki confirmed. “The revenue collector was crossing the expressway when the truck struck him, resulting in his immediate death.”
LASTMA officers responded swiftly to the scene and managed the situation, while the deceased’s body was transferred to the Adigboluje Police Division. Authorities are coordinating with the family for necessary procedures.
Bakare-Oki further revealed that the victim’s wife arrived at the scene upon hearing the news, devastated by the tragic event. The truck, which had caused significant traffic congestion, was promptly cleared by traffic officers and handed over to the police for further investigation.
“The actions of the truck driver are deeply regrettable,” Bakare-Oki said, expressing condolences to the family of the victim. “We also call on transport union leaders to take swift action against those responsible for this senseless act.”
The search for the truck driver is ongoing.
