Jon Jones has successfully defended his heavyweight title with an impressive stoppage of Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, finishing the legendary fighter with a spinning back kick to the body.
The matchup had been met with mixed reactions from fans, many of whom were more interested in seeing Jones face Tom Aspinall, who had won the interim title last November. Aspinall also retained the belt in July after a scheduled bout between Jones and Miocic was derailed due to Jones’ injury.
However, despite the fan demand for a fight with Aspinall, Jones has been firm in his stance of not facing the British fighter. Aspinall, who was present in the crowd at Madison Square Garden for UFC 309, witnessed Jones’ victory firsthand, but Jones made no mention of a potential title unification bout.
Jones looked dominant against Miocic, controlling the action in round one by tripping his opponent and landing a series of elbows. While Miocic showed resilience, he struggled to mount any serious offense against the 37-year-old champion. Jones continued his dominance into round three, where he delivered a spinning back kick that sent Miocic to the canvas. Jones quickly followed with ground and pound, prompting referee Herb Dean to stop the fight.
In celebration, Jones entertained the crowd with a dance mimicking that of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who was seated just a few feet away. Trump seemed to approve of Jones’ moves, as the two shared a brief moment outside the cage following the fight.
UFC 309, held on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York, had a notable Trump-themed atmosphere, with walkouts, highlight reels, and multiple references to the president-elect throughout the event.
