The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger will formally end their membership in the regional bloc on January 29, 2025.

This decision was revealed in a communique issued at the conclusion of the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, held in Abuja.

During the session, ECOWAS expressed its respect for the sovereignty of the three nations and their decision to leave the organization, as provided for under Article 91 of the revised ECOWAS Treaty.

Despite the withdrawal notification, ECOWAS has scheduled a six-month transition period from January 29 to July 29, 2025, during which negotiations led by Senegalese President Macky Sall and Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé will continue in hopes of reintegrating the countries into the bloc.

“If during the transition period the three Sahel countries decide to rejoin the community, they would be readmitted,” the communique stated.
