The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of Kaduna Eboigbodin, a former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who died at a police checkpoint on Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City.

Edo Police spokesperson Moses Yamu revealed on Wednesday that the Commissioner of Police, Umoru Ozigi, ordered a thorough probe into the incident, which occurred on Monday.

Sources reported that Eboigbodin was traveling with his wife when police stopped them and requested his vehicle’s documents, which he provided. However, discrepancies in the papers allegedly led officers to accuse him of driving a stolen vehicle.

The situation escalated when Eboigbodin refused to follow police instructions to drive to the station, insisting on clarity about his alleged offense. Amid the heated exchange, he reportedly collapsed on the spot.

Witnesses claimed that the officers fled the scene, leaving his wife to rush him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Superintendent Moses Yamu expressed the command’s concern over the incident and promised to investigate potential “unprofessional conduct” by the officers involved.

“The commissioner of police noted the cordial working relationship between the police, civil society organisations, NLC and all critical stakeholders in the state and has, therefore, directed the immediate investigation into the incident.

“The Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice prevails in every situation,” Mr Yamu said.
