Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has suspended the chairman and members of the State’s Teachers Service Commission (TSC) following allegations of illegally recruiting over 1,000 teachers.

The scandal came to light after the commission exceeded the approved recruitment figure and bypassed due process.

Initially, the governor had approved the recruitment of 1,000 teachers in February 2023 to address a manpower shortage in the state’s teaching service. However, the commission unlawfully inflated the number, engaging over 1,000 additional teachers without authorization.

The issue became public when the illegally recruited teachers were not paid their salaries, unlike their officially approved counterparts.

This discrepancy led to public outcry and prompted Governor Sule to summon a meeting with the TSC members and other education officials at the Government House in Lafia.

During the meeting, which included the Commissioner for Education, Mr. John Mamman, and the TSC Chairman, Malam Mohammed Gada, the commission admitted to the unauthorized recruitment.

Allegations of racketeering also surfaced, raising concerns about corruption in the process.

In response, Governor Sule ordered a three-man committee to investigate the scandal and recommend appropriate actions.
