World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, has recounted how he narrowly escaped harm during an Israeli airstrike on Sanaa International Airport on Thursday.
The strike was part of a broader offensive targeting the Iran-aligned Houthi movement in Yemen.
Reflecting on the incident, Tedros said the deafening explosions left his ears ringing for over 24 hours.
He described the chaos that unfolded as people frantically ran for safety after approximately four blasts, one of which detonated alarmingly close to his location near the airport’s departure lounge.
“I was not sure I could survive because it was so close, a few meters from where we were,” he told Reuters. “A slight deviation could have resulted in a direct hit.”
Tedros and his team remained stranded at the airport for about an hour as drones reportedly circled overhead, heightening fears of further attacks. He noted the lack of protection or safe spaces amidst the wreckage.
“There (was) no shelter at all. Nothing. So you’re just exposed, just waiting for anything to happen,” he said, adding that he and his colleagues observed missile fragments scattered among the debris.
