The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has praised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for relaunching the Christmas Discount Market, a thoughtful initiative aimed at providing affordable goods to residents during the festive season.
The prominent civil advocacy group observed that the programme, which had been suspended for a decade, was revived as part of the governor’s commitment to alleviating economic hardship and fostering a spirit of celebration among Rivers State residents.
“The Christmas Discount Market is being held at Elekahia Stadium in Port Harcourt from December 18 to December 28. It offers residents the opportunity to purchase essential goods such as food items and household necessities at significantly discounted rates. Vendors at the market were provided free spaces, ensuring they could lower prices for consumers while still earning profit. Beyond the shopping opportunities, the event has incorporated entertainment activities, including musical performances, a Christmas village, and a serene playground for children. This combination of commerce and festivity has made the market an accessible and enjoyable experience for families across Rivers State, ” HURIWA said in a statement by its national coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, on Friday.
The rights group lauded this initiative as a model for other states in Nigeria to adopt, adding the Christmas Discount Market is an example of people-centered governance that prioritizes the welfare of citizens during economically challenging times.
The association stressed that states in the South East, such as Imo and Anambra, could benefit greatly from implementing similar programs, especially given the economic and security challenges prevalent in those regions. The association highlighted Rivers State’s proactive governance as a blueprint for economic transformation.
The association also commended Governor Fubara’s broader achievements in governance, noting his ability to remain focused on development despite facing significant political distractions. “Reportedly, the governor’s administration has prioritized increasing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which has surged from ₦12 billion to a peak of ₦28 billion monthly during peak periods. This increase has allowed the state to finance critical projects without resorting to additional borrowing, showcasing prudent financial management amidst economic constraints,” HURIWA echoed.
HURIWA acknowledged the governor’s strides in infrastructure development, citing examples such as the Port Harcourt Ring Road, the Trans-Kalabari Road, and the Elele-Omoku Road. These projects are being executed with a focus on quality and efficiency, thanks to partnerships with reputable contractors. The association noted that these infrastructural developments are set to significantly improve transportation and connectivity in the state, contributing to economic growth and social well-being.
The association further praised Governor Fubara’s commitment to education and healthcare. Secondary schools across Rivers State have reportedly seen notable improvements, while primary healthcare centers have been upgraded to better serve rural communities. In addition, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital has received enhancements aimed at providing quality tertiary healthcare and handling complex medical referrals.
HURIWA also highlighted the administration’s support for small businesses as a testament to its inclusive approach to economic development. “Through a partnership with the Bank of Industry, the government has committed ₦4 billion to support micro and small-scale enterprises. These funds are being disbursed at single-digit interest rates with flexible repayment plans, empowering businesses to grow and create jobs while driving economic activity across the state,” HURIWA stated.
Despite his achievements, Governor Fubara has faced politically motivated attacks from detractors within the state. HURIWA expressed concern over these distractions, describing them as counterproductive and detrimental to the state’s progress. The association criticized those who appear more interested in destabilizing Rivers State for political gain rather than supporting its growth. It described the governor’s ability to navigate these challenges while delivering impactful governance as a demonstration of strong leadership and resilience.
HURIWA emphasized that Rivers State’s economic and social progress under Governor Fubara’s leadership is a shining example of the potential for transformational governance in Nigeria. The association urged other state governors, particularly those in the South East, to take inspiration from Rivers State’s economic revolution. It noted that while multi-dimensional poverty remains a major issue across the country, proactive governance can mitigate its effects and drive positive change.
The association pointed out that Rivers State’s robust economy, improved infrastructure, and enhanced social services are a result of the governor’s prioritization of good governance. It called on stakeholders across Nigeria to replicate the Rivers State model by adopting policies that focus on economic relief and social development. HURIWA stressed that governors must take proactive steps to address the pressing needs of their citizens, particularly during times of economic uncertainty.
HURIWA reiterated its support for Governor Fubara, commending him for his efforts to improve the lives of Rivers people and to create opportunities for growth and development. The association encouraged the governor to continue his transformative work and to remain steadfast in his commitment to serving the people, despite the challenges posed by political opposition. It noted that the people of Rivers State stand to benefit immensely from the governor’s unwavering dedication to their welfare.
