Real Madrid and Brazil star Vinicius Jr has been honored as the FIFA Best Men’s Player of the Year in a glittering ceremony held in Doha.
The 24-year-old winger claimed the prestigious award following an extraordinary season that saw him play a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s domestic and European dominance.
The recognition comes on the heels of controversy after Vinicius and his Real Madrid teammates opted to boycott the recent Ballon d’Or ceremony, where Manchester City midfielder Rodri was crowned the winner.
However, Vinicius’s outstanding performances throughout the 2023-24 campaign could not go unnoticed.
His contributions were central to Real Madrid’s success as the Spanish giants secured both the Champions League and La Liga titles. Across all competitions, Vinicius delivered 24 goals and 11 assists, underlining his status as one of the world’s most impactful attackers.
This FIFA Best Award marks Vinicius Jr’s first major individual accolade of this magnitude, following in the footsteps of football legends Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski, who dominated the award in recent years.
Earlier in the ceremony, Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati was named the FIFA Best Women’s Player of the Year for the second consecutive time. Her continued dominance in women’s football further cements her legacy as one of the sport’s greatest talents.
The FIFA Best Awards evaluate player performances between August 2023 and August 2024. Winners are decided through a weighted voting process, including public votes, journalists’ selections, and votes from national team captains and coaches. Each group carries equal influence, with 25% of the final decision.
Adding to the club’s eventful week, Real Madrid’s presence in Qatar extends beyond Vinicius’s award. The team is gearing up for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final against Mexican side Pachuca, set to take place at Lusail Stadium on Wednesday.
