Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Sunday hit back at former Rivers governor, Peter Odili, over his comment that he (Wike) was almost turning the state to his private estate.

Wike, who is the immediate past governor of Rivers, accused Odili of grabbing strategic government positions for his immediate family members.

Speaking at a church service on Sunday, the FCT Minister, who did not specifically mention Odili’s name, said : “Between him and myself, who has turned Rivers State to his personal estate? His wife is a Chairman of Governing Council, his daughter is a commissioner, his other daughter is a judge and he is the general overseer. Who has now turned Rivers State to his private estate? I am sure if care is not taken, if there is a chance, he can even arrange a marriage for the governor.

“It was his nephew, his late senior brother’s son that was recommended for commissioner. He took the slot and gave it to his own daughter. Someone who didn’t remember to stand for the son of his late elder brother, is that an elder statesman?”

Abujapress reports that Odili while speaking at a Christmas ballad organized in honour of Siminalayi Fubara a few days ago praised the governor for thwarting what he described as an attempt by Wike to turn Rivers into his private estate.

“Governor Fubara confronted the challenge, prevented the quest by one man to capture the State as a private estate, emancipated Rivers people, steadied governance, and made civil servants and Rivers people happier as it used to be until he left office in 2007,” Odili said.

He noted that since October 25, 2023, Fubara has demonstrated courage in handling what he referred to as a fierce but unwarranted political struggle for the soul of Rivers State.

The event, Odili explained, was a gesture of appreciation for Fubara’s leadership and determination.
