In a surprising development, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday evening, signaling the end of his tenure as the leader of the North American country.
Trudeau, who has served as Prime Minister since 2015, stated that he will step down as soon as the ruling Liberal Party selects a new leader to take his place.
“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister,” Trudeau, who has been in power since 2015, told reporters in Ottawa following a protracted political crisis that saw top Liberal allies urge him to quit.
The Liberal Party is now set to begin the process of choosing a new leader to guide the party and the country forward.
