The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has dismissed as unfounded and misleading the claims made by Mr. Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, regarding threats to his life.
In a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, Ganduje called the allegations “sheer mischief” and “outright falsehoods,” stating that they would have been ignored if not for the necessity of correcting the “baseless narrative.”
The APC Chairman expressed dismay over the accusations shared by Obi on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, accusing Obi of fabricating a malicious story in an attempt to gain attention and evoke sympathy for emotional manipulation.
Ganduje further clarified that Obi’s claims were based on a misunderstanding of comments made by Mr. Felix Morka, APC National Publicity Secretary, during a January 4, 2025, interview on Arise TV’s ThisDay Live.
He firmly stated that at no point did Morka threaten Obi or his family.
“By falsely claiming that Morka threatened his life, Mr. Obi has libeled Morka in the extreme and incited his online supporters to issue death threats against Morka and his family,” Ganduje remarked.
He emphasized that Obi, as a public figure, should provide accurate information, pointing out that spreading falsehoods erodes public trust. He also clarified that Morka’s remarks were a response to a question about “prophets of doom” and “voodoo economics,” and contained no threats of any kind toward Obi or anyone else.
“Morka’s comments were strictly in response to a question and did not constitute or imply any threats,” Ganduje explained.
The APC Chairman reaffirmed the importance of free speech, a constitutional right for all Nigerians, and urged Obi to accept criticism as part of the democratic process rather than resorting to misinformation.
“Does Mr. Obi expect the APC to stand by while the opposition spreads falsehoods without challenge?” Ganduje questioned, adding that the APC would continue to respond to baseless claims with facts.
He reiterated the party’s support for Morka, affirming that the National Publicity Secretary was simply performing his role by defending the federal government and addressing disinformation from “desperate politicians.”
Ganduje also reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to democratic principles, emphasizing that the party will continue to hold opposition figures accountable when necessary.
